Let’s get to it and discuss the details of it.

Tools Every Man Needs: Indispensable Tools for your next DIY Project

Hammer

Whether you’re looking to smash something, drive in nails, repair walls of your house, beat framing into alignment, or break concrete, you require a multi-purpose claw hammer. Despite the fact that it seems too simple a tool to have in reality, for every DIY project, good quality hammers can make a huge difference. A hammer, is probably one of the most important and used tools every man needs as part of his home tool kit.

A very common multi-purpose hammer has a claw opposite to the whacking head so you pry out the driven nails when needed. These are ideal for general carpentry and woodworking. Some modern style hammers have a wide strike face, an anti-vibration design handle with a axe-style for a slip-free grip. Some other types of hammers include a dead-blow hammer, ball-peen hammer, drywall hammer, and a rubber mallet hammer.

But some of these hammers are specialized for specific needs like a rubber mallet is the best choice for assembling or disassembling furniture and driving tent-pegs into the ground when camping. Anyhow, the choice of hammer is purely subjective, so try them out and choose what you like. No matter what type of hammer you’re using make sure to use protective eye-wear.

We Recommend:

Made by the same Estwing that most of our dads had when we grew up, with just a slightly more durable rubber handle, this hammer should serve you well, and is proven.

Screw Drivers

The second most important simple hand tool in our list of tools every man needs is a screwdriver, well not just one, but a set of screwdrivers. Regardless of the type of DIY project you’re into, a lot of things are attached with screws, and having a a set of them is a must. From doorknobs, cabinet doors, covers, and even furniture; all woodworking products are held together by screws. So, while anytime you’ll try to fix any of these things, you’ll need a screwdriver to remove screws and put them back.

The two most common types of screwdrivers are slotted screwdrivers and Phillips screwdrivers. A slotted one has a flat head shape while Phillips has a star shape and both are a must-have in your DIY toolkit. It is pretty important that you choose the best type of screwdriver based on the screw slot otherwise it will round off the edges and things will become messy. A good quality screwdriver has a fine tip with a comfortable grip to hold and rotate without trouble.

Yes, a electric bit driver with bits makes it much easier and faster when doing many, but the chances are also higher of stripping your screw heads with that, and when precision is required, they simply wont do, so still having the original basic screwdriver set is imperative.

Wrenches and Spanners

If you’re considering some simple plumbing repair in your kitchen or toilet; you have to reach out for that simple adjustable wrench every time. Your DIY toolbox is never complete without an adjustable wrench.

If you frequently play around nuts, it’s recommended to get a bigger and a smaller wrench. The smaller adjustable wrench will come handy when undoing small nuts, especially in hard-to-reach places. Needless to say that a good quality wrench is a standard part of your toolbox and is among the most useful tools for home improvement projects and auto repair.

Instead of buying a key-set for various sizes of nuts, an adjustable wrench will take care of most of the screws and nuts, and can be a versatile multi-tasking part of the tools every man needs. You can easily roll-in or out the adjustable part to fit around the fastener without damaging the outside body. Adjustable wrenches and especially a crescent type wrench can take care of all plumbing operations including fastening faucets, pipes, elbows, unions, and more.

We Recommend:

Also called a shifting spanner set, this adjustable wrench set should cover most size you should come across.

A spanner set, especially the ratcheting kind, can save you a lot of time, and arm/hand fatigue when fastening and loosening many different nuts and bolts, the ratcheting featuring, allowing you to carry on loosening or tightening without having to lift the spanner off the nut to reset it.

Saw

You can tackle most of your woodworking DIY projects at home with a good handsaw. Whether you’re looking to cut through simple wood or metal, a handsaw is one of the useful tools every man needs for all your cutting needs quickly. You are unlikely find any house without a basic handsaw, which is a must-have for home DIY toolboxes. If you need to cut through something harder than wood, you probably need a hacksaw. It can work flawlessly on hard stuff including all metal pieces.

If you require precision while cutting through large logs into smaller pieces for moving, a lumberjack saw is ideal and can do the difference. It’s not that complicated to use a basic saw, just draw the blade with teeth across the object and it’ll make cuts quickly.

Depending on the requirements of use, different sizes of handsaws are available including a varied number of teeth per inch. Anyhow, if you’re not sure what size will suit your everyday needs, better get a handsaw kit that comes with different sizes of saws in it.

Pliers

If you mess around with mechanical objects quite often, you need to have a few basic pliers in your toolbox. A standard set of pliers in your toolbox can cover a pretty broad range of applications including gripping, positioning, twisting and cutting, tightening or loosening wires, nuts, bolts, and nails. Although there are unlimited variations of pliers with some being tailored for specific applications, a basic combination of some of them are surely tools every man needs.

The most common type of pliers is the slip joint pliers, that has an adjustable pivot point rather than a fixed rivet. This allows the two pieces of the pliers to shift, which extends the range of the jaws so you can grip materials of varying thickness.

Most common pliers have flat jaws with a serrated texture that helps in the flat surface to grip. Behind this flat portion, there are curved or rounded surfaces that are made to grip pipes, rods, and other cylindrical objects.

Another common type of pliers is the needle nose pliers that have pointed and elongated jaws. These are a must to have in case you’ve got to work with electrical wires, networking, jewelry making. The pointed elongated jaws allow you to reach tight places that are inaccessible to other types of pliers.

We Recommend:

Including 6″ diagonal pliers, 6″ long nosed pliers, 7″ lineman pliers, 6″ slip joint pliers and 8″ groove joint pliers, this set should cover most tasks that may come your way.

Tape Measure

Whether you want to determine what size couch you need for your living room or if you’re crafting a bookshelf you require a device that can help you measure exact dimensions or lengths. Similarly, there are many times in your DIY quest when you require a good measuring tape around the house to determine the size of an object or to measure the distance between two objects. Especially while working with wood or metal you have to measure the exact size of the objects as guessing will take you nowhere.

Common tape measures are made of thin metal sheets with a visible yellow or white color, with black distance markings for measuring more accurately. Depending on the project, try to find one of suitable length and the units of measure you prefer. Modern tape measures have a retracting mechanism so the tape just rolls back with the push of a button. Some also come with a locking push button that helps you keep a record of the noted readings.

Level

During every framing job around your house or while hanging any wall decor, you will need to determine the true horizontal or vertical plane of surface, or ensure that two matching pairs hang at the same horizontal level; that’s where a spirit level is essential. In a lot of DIY repair and building projects, it is pretty important to have a flat surface.

A typical bubble level is a straight tool with tiny, clear bontainer of fluid built into the center. The position of the bubble helps in determining the leveled surface. You can use this bubble level while hanging pictures, installing cabinets, laying a patio, crafting a bookshelf, and all your woodworking projects.

Some advanced DIYers can get a laser level that projects level lines with the touch of a button. Depending on the extent of your surface you can get the appropriate size of level up to four-foot.

We Recommend:

This 3-piece level set, should be all you ever need for DIY and home improvement projects, and when taken care of, should last your lifetime.

Drill

While you’re working with wood, masonry, plastic or other materials at home; there is bound to be the need to make holes while fixing things together or hanging things up. There are thousands of options when it comes to drill machines and what is available and for what jobs, but you will find that a mid-range model from one of the bigger more well-known and reputable brands, should serve you well for most.

If you are about to start your first DIY project, this is possibly the most important tool you might need. While hanging your LED light on the wall, you can’t just use a hand-held screwdriver to drive screws inside the walls. Use the drill function to drill holes in the wall and then replace the drill bit with a screwdriver bit to drive screws.

Similarly, you’ll have to reach for drill/driver while replacing a light fixture, repairing drywall, or building anything from a bookcase to a doll-house. You can either choose the cordless drill for freedom and portability but if you are going to be drilling bigger holes in tougher materials, you will be paying MUCH more for the same power cordless drill than you would for that power corded drill.

Dremel

A unique tool, or power-tool if you can call it that, that was hardly known or though of a few years ago, has since it’s launch become quite irreplaceable in it’s utility and number of small jobs that it can help complete. A Dremel tool is awesome for all those odd jobs, whether it is cutting, drilling, engraving, polishing or grinding, it does it all. There really is sometimes no other tool that can do the little jobs that the dremel does quickly and effectively, and because of the nature of most of those jobs being at odd times and places, we would most certainly recommend the cordless rechargeable model here, so you do not need to look for a plug point or an extension just to sand a little odd corner of a room with a nail sticking out. Another awesome job that the Dremel can be used for, is if you have any screws with stripped heads that cannot hold a screw driver anymore, you simply cut a flat line in the top of it with the thin cutting disc, and your flat head screwdriver will make easy work of that screw.

Tiny Tools

Even more common, is the small odd jobs needing quick adjustment or repair on a mini or micro scale. Stuff like sunglasses and reading glasses losing the tiny screws that hold the ears or lenses on. Watch battery or bracelet replacement. Remote battery replacement. Whatever other tiny jobs are bound to pop up often, we have found the awesome little bit set tool kit from Wiha, to become so essential, we simply cannot live without it.

Tool Box

There is no point in having the various tools every man needs, if they lie around and get lost all the time. Tool boxes, whilst essential, are a very different and personal choice. It all depends what kind of tools you will be keeping in them, and how you usually like to keep your own stuff organized. If you are like many men that just chuck your tools into a big box when done and don’t mind digging around for them before the next jobs, a deep box with a lid and no internal dividers are the way to go. If however, you like to keep your tools organized and accessible with easy drawer, and even possibly custom cut foam compartments, then a drawer based box is the way to go. We like steel tool boxes, but only if tools are secured in them otherwise they damage and make a mess, for the chuck in kind, plastic is the way to go.

Car Tool Kit

When it comes to car tools every man should have, there are a few basics, but not as many as in your home. Tape measures for instance, are hardly ever used on or in a car, but they are great to have in your car tool kit, as you may need it to measure something else wherever you are, especially if at the mall or shops and want to know if something will fit in your home or a space before buying it. A bubble level is another tool, that although often needed at home, I have yet to see one be use on a vehicle. Ratchets, screwdrivers, pliers and a wrench or two in the right common automotive sizes should serve you well with most tasks you need tools in your car for. Some people prefer as little as possible to save space, and other prefer being as prepared as possible bringing most tools they may ever need. Some people prefer a strong tool box or case for their car toolkit, other prefer a neat rugged tool bag or tool roll to prevent rattling. Here is one for each of those preferences you may have, we have both, and have used both in our vehicles, and we definitely recommend them.

Conclusion

If you’re just stepping in the DIY world, don’t rush to get all the tools on the list. First, try to figure out the work you like to take on and then you can determine the set of tools required, and at least the basic tools every man needs. The tools just described are pretty basic and are general for all types of DIY projects, they comprise the very best tools every man should have. For the more specific projects, you may have to get an additional set of tools. Like for woodworking, you may have to get a nail gun, clamps, a sander, a miter saw, and a circular saw. Similarly, for electrical work, you may require a volt-meter, extension cords, and specific pliers.

Thus, it is not wise to spend on all tools when you are not even using it quite often. The best toolkit would be the one you’ll use regularly.
