Yeah you read right, and itching anus. To many people this may seem an odd title or subject to write a post on. But if you are one of roughly 16 million Americans living with Pruritus Ani, this will not really seem to be odd advice, but rather much needed help.

Anal itching is more common than you think, and if you have ever suffered some form of it, you would know how both embarrassing it is, and also how absolutely depressingly debilitating and life ruining it can be. It literally affects pretty much every part of your life and dramatically impacts your enjoyment and quality of life.

itching anus causes

It is so hard to deal with, admit to a doctor and manage in fact, that we have heard multiple doctors jokingly mention the inside joke about Pruritus Ani, “you refer a client with Pruritus Ani to a different doctor or specialist which you do not like”. The reason is because it is often so hard to cure or get under control.

One of the reasons it is so hard to manage or cure, is because there has been nearly 100 different documented causes for it, so firstly finding the cause of your own specific case, is the hardest part.

Our top tips for managing skin irritant or eczema based Pruritus Ani:

  1. Stop scratching you ass. Literally, refrain from any scratching or irritant touching or pressing of the area and skin surrounding you anus. This alone will solve most of the problem on it’s own.
  2. Wash you anal region in the shower or bath, only with your hand and water or a very mild soap, and then wash that hand with soap and a nail brush, no strong soaps or any soaps on the anal region at all, as these are huge irritants.
  3. Let you anal region air dry properly before putting on underwear and getting dressed, towel dry, is not really dry.
  4. Do not excessively wipe you anus with toilet paper after taking a dump, if it is not clean after 3 – 4 wipes, rather use a wet wipe, take a shower or use a bidet. Also try and use the best and softest toilet paper you can afford.
  5. Use a prescription cortisone based ointment at the first signs that a slight itch is becoming more irritant or severe and only for maximum one or two times at 12 hour intervals. Thereafter if it becomes more sore, irritated or infected, the cortisone ointment may harm the skin more than help it.

This should keep your itching at bay in 95% of the cases, and prevent the itching from becoming worse, or turning to pain and a full-blown skin infection. This is what you want to avoid the most, as when it has developed into an inflamed red or even open wound skin infection, the pain and irritation become unbearable, prevent most movement and daily activities and even keeping you out of your sleep. If however you have reached this point, we have advice as to treat it further below.

Anal Skin Infection

If your Pruritus Ani has worsened and the skin has become inflamed, red and sore, then the prescribed and strong cortisone ointments are not going to help or treat it anymore, as they now do more damage to the broken damaged skin cells than good, so the best is a gentler approach consisting of your own home-made ointment, and then also firstly following the initial care steps outline at the top, no scratching, irritant soaps and keeping the area dry.

The homemade anal skin itch prevention ointment should consist of a combination of Savlon Antiseptic cream which contains Cetrimide and Chlorhexidine, and then either Urea and Lauromacrogol containing E45 cream, or Urea and Cetomacrogol containing Flexitol, both of these work well and which one you choose will depend on your own results or which one of the two is available to you.

You mix these two creams together 50/50, meaning 1 part of each, and then apply this mixture gently to the affected area of skin, two to three times daily, making sure the skin is dry before applying.

This mixture will not only calm and soothe the itching and inflammation, but it will also moisturize and repair the affected skin as well.

If your infection has become a full-blown bacterial skin infection that does not get better with this homemade ointment mixture alone, a strong prescription antibiotic medicine taken orally and as prescribed by your Doctor should be take in combination with this homemade ointment treatment.

Conclusion

Prevention is better than cure, and following the basic care and hygiene instruction we laid out above is the best way to prevent Pruritus Ani (itching anus) from getting worse in the first place. However because this stuff is not commonly taught, we know most people will only find this post once it has become bad or unbearable, so then luckily our homemade ointment mix should get your anal region back to normal in no time.
